Michigan Rehabilitation Specialists’ Athletic Training mission is to help enhance the quality of health care provided by Certified Athletic Trainers and to help support the advancement of the profession per the guide lines set by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association.
Certified Athletic Trainers specialize in the treatment, assessment, prevention and rehabilitation of athletic injuries/illnesses for a variety of individuals who compete in recreational, amateur, and professional levels of competition.
Athletic Training is practiced by a Certified Athletic Trainer collaborating with physicians and other allied health care professionals to optimize the activity and performance levels of patients and clients. Athletic Training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities.
Educational Background
Certified Athletic Trainers must earn a degree from an accredited Athletic Training curriculum. Accredited programs include formal instruction in the areas of illness/injury prevention, first aid and emergency care, assessment of injury/illness, human anatomy and physiology, therapeutic modalities, and nutrition. Classroom learning is further enhanced through clinical experiences. Once a student has graduated from an accredited athletic training program, they must pass a comprehensive exam administered by the Board of Certification. Once certified the Athletic Trainer must meet on going continuing education requirements to maintain certification.
